Asthma is a chronic condition characterized by shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing due to the narrowing of the bronchi. Asthma that has symptoms concerning the bronchi is commonly referred to as bronchial asthma. Bronchodilators are designed to help this narrowing of the bronchi in the event of an asthma attack. There are also bronchodilators made to prevent the narrowing of the bronchi.
Asthma is known for its recent increase in prevalence. It occurs in mostly urban children in early years. Sometimes, asthma symptoms disappear when a child reaches a certain age. However, the asthma can resurface when theyre older; typically reappearing for those in their late 30s to 50s. This can be attributed to the toxic environment. In the same environment, non-asthmatics may develop asthma.
Non-asthmatics do not have inhalers with them. But they actually can develop asthma from prolonged exposure to noxious gases. Albuterol, also known as salbutamol, is one of the most common bronchodilators that asthmatics carry. These medications provide fast-acting relief of asthma attacks; with relief achieved in less than twenty minutes. An alternative for this is ipratropium.
Ipratropium is an anticholinergic drug developed for treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. While it was designed primarily as a treatment drug for COPD, it has been applied and shown to have worked in asthma. It falls under the classification of short-acting bronchodilator despite the longer time it takes for the medication to take effect. Ipratropium takes about an hour to achieve full effectiveness. It is also almost always combined with albuterol or salbutamol for better effect.
Anticholinergic drugs generally have side-effects like those experienced in recreational drug use. But as an inhalant, ipratropium does not display these side-effects. It is also not addictive ” probably because it lacks the euphoria factor. The advantage of of ipratropium is it does not affect the heart. Bronchodilators and epinephrine has cardiac side-effects ” a shortcoming that ipratropium makes up for. This makes it an ideal drug for those with, not only cardiac asthma, but new and acute asthma as well.
